Discover Kaleidoscope, children’s books for an egalitarian world!

This web directory of more than 400 books with stories that are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes hilarious, promotes egalitarian models and behaviors among 0-12 year olds.

Very early in their lives, children are assigned distinctive social roles related to being a boy or a girl, being of one cultural origin or another, coming from a heterosexual family or not, meeting beauty standards or not. Certain behaviors, often transmitted or adopted unconsciously, are the expression of discrimination and inequality.

In order to promote non-stereotypical representations of children and, at the same time, participate in the construction of a more egalitarian and inclusive world, the YWCA Quebec, through its Girls’ Centre team, has made a selection of books deemed exemplary in terms of equality education.

Classified by age category but also by theme, the books in the Kaleidoscope selection address subjects of social interest such as cultural diversity, family diversity, the right to education, homosexuality, body image, immigration, etc. The books proposed will help children to get away from preconceived ideas and reductive roles that may be associated with them, in addition to encouraging reflection, the development of critical thinking, openness and tolerance. These books are an excellent starting point for dialogue with children and provide them with the appropriate vocabulary to express themselves.

A Kaleidoscope is a toy that allows you to see reality in all its colors, in all its facets. A reality that sometimes changes depending on who is looking at it, but which especially makes differences and diversity shine. Today we are pleased to put Kaleidoscope in your hands. We hope that you will be able to use it to help the children around you to build a more equal world.

The suggested books are available in Quebec public libraries and bookstores.
