ACCOMMODATION AND SUPPORT FOR WOMEN IN DIFFICULTY
Many women whose lives are turned upside down for various reasons find themselves without a safe place to live and in a situation of homelessness due to the lack of an adequate support network. Each year, the YWCA provides shelter, safety, comfort and support to over 300 women and children who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The needs are constantly growing and the resources in the region are limited. In the past year, our team has had to deny over 2,100 requests for housing compared to 500 in 2014.
The YWCA Quebec’s objective with women in difficulty is not only to offer them a safe place to stay, but also to accompany them towards a return to autonomy. As a result, our interventions are aimed at regaining confidence and power over their lives. Each woman’s stay at the YWCA is different depending on her personal situation: her physical and mental health, her family and financial situation, etc.
DEVELOP GIRLS’ LEADERSHIP AND CIVIC INVOLVEMENT
Despite the advances, women – especially girls – still face many gender-specific barriers. Especially as they approach adolescence, girls :
- Experience high rates of sexual assault and other forms of violence.
- Experience a marked deterioration in their mental health and confidence.
- Are subject to toxic sexualization and negative stereotyping.
For more than 10 years, the Girls’ Centre has been working to address gender inequality through a positive approach. Our animation team accompanies the participants in our programs in the development of projects that reflect their image, that aim at discovering themselves and making their leadership and their talents shine, as well as contributing to the development of their self-esteem.
